Description, duties, responsibilities
Evaluation of loan applications deciding whether to approve an applicant for finance. Liaising with BDMs, Introducers and Borrowers for them to obtain personal, financial and other relevant information to the decision-making process. Underwriters assist applicants by explaining the terms of the offered loan and their repayment terms by carrying out telephone or face-to-face interviews. Underwriters then evaluate and analyse the relevant information of a loan applicant to make a final decision whether to lend money. Legal due diligence is also a key consideration. Ensure all cases and dealings with customers are carried out in a fully compliant manner, in accordance with the FCA’s Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) ethos and ensuring the FCA’s Principles of Business (PRIN) are adhered to at all times.
- New application file reviews
- Ensuring all applications adhere to KYC regulations
- Place customers (both our clients and their retail customers) at the heart of our business
- Ensure appropriate sign-off of Sightings Papers
- Case ownership from offer issued to completion.
- Google and internet investigation on all applicants.
- Request for any further information required to fully underwrite a case from introducer or applicant.
- Sightings Papers
- Creating and issuing offer letters on completion of a fully executed Sightings Paper and Loan Costing Sheet.
- Checking offer letters prepared by other underwriters.
- Prepare borrowers outstanding list and supporting information and send to all parties.
- Chasing offers issued back from borrowers / introducers. (Liaising direct with the BDM if any delays occur).
- Logging offers received onto loan system.
- Valuation quotes and time frames – feeding information back to the introducer / borrower for decision to proceed (liaising direct with the BDM if any delays occur).
- Chasing borrowers for payment of valuation and information required by the valuer.
- Chasing valuation reports.
- Review and approval of valuation reports.
- Requesting and chasing introducer, borrowers and borrowers solicitors for outstanding KYC and CP’s.
- Review and approval of KYC, CP’s and supporting information.
- Requesting consent to a second charge, mortgage statement and redemption statement where applicable.
- Equifax (Individual and corporate).
- Call ML.
- All appropriate checks including (but not limited to) Sira, HMT Sanctions,
- Insolvency, IBAN.
- Scanning and saving the hard copy file into the electronic file as appropriate
- Valuation & Solicitor’s instructions.
- Completing Treasury documents.
- Full completion of Drawdown Request Information Pack forms
- Borrower Telephone Interviews to be completed on receipt of valuation report.
- Signature checks.
- Review and sign off RoT ensuring signed off by a partner or senior solicitor.
- Pre drawdown security check.

Personality requirements and skills
- Strong knowledge of the Regulatory aspects of the financial services sector including risk, compliance and conduct.
- Strong knowledge of Regulatory framework including FCA, FOS, ICO etc.
- A thorough knowledge of UK property markets, UK property law and secured lending process
- Minimum of 2 years Underwriting experience with own mandate
- Experience of Residential & Commercial Underwriting
- Passion for offering great service and results
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Sound knowledge of Underwriting principles and methods
- PC Competent – Outlook, Word, Excel
